What is abuse?

Domestic abuse is physical, sexual, psychological, emotional or financial abuse that usually takes place within the home, and is perpetrated by a partner, ex-partner, family member or carer.

Domestic abuse is not solely acts of violence. It also includes:

  • Psychological and/or emotional abuse
  • Financial/economic abuse
  • Online and/or digital abuse (tech abuse)

It can also include stalking and harassment, controlling and threatening behaviour, forced marriage, ‘honour-based’ crimes and female genital mutilation (FGM).

Not all forms of domestic violence and abuse are crimes, but they will still affect your quality of life.

By addressing this at an early stage, it is far easier for you to recover.

Domestic violence and abuse is rarely a one-off incident and is a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviour through which the abuser seeks power over their victim.

It occurs across the whole of society, regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, disability, religion, class, or lifestyle and income.
